Should women be allowed in “combat roles” within the military?

I dont believe they should be in line units and the reason why is due to natural reactions to the opposite sex. Those reactions happen internally and no.matter how hard you try or pretend that they dont, they cannot be stopped. There are several smaller issues which can be midigated, like vulgar habits for example, but one of the big ones is sex. You might think well thats simple just dont allow it, right? Wrong. Everyone knows its gonna happen whether theres a rule for it or not. So lets get past that part of it. Now, I dont know how the army infantry ran shit but in the marines the 03s generally took their jobs very seriously. It was a work hard play hard atmosphere but if you were a fuckup you were going to have a very hard 4 years. Screw up once youre gonna get yelled at and maybe even have a little informal PMI, a couple times might just mean a ass beating, but if youre the kind of person who fucks up repeatedly…. Lets just say I dont think the 03 field is for you. The reason why is because marines are traditionally sent to some of the toughest A/Os. You fucking up could and sometimes does cost people their lives. Theres a BIGGG difference between garrison marines and combat marines, its not about following arbitrary rules because it instills discipline and looks good on camera. The shit you do, like paying fucking attention while on overwatch, can mean the difference between a quick firefight, and a ‘we regret to inform you’ letter sent out to someones wife, kids, and parents. Its one of lifes little ironies that it never seems to be the fuckup who dies either. Im not saying women are fuckups, not at all. Im talking about human nature, internal bio-chemical reactions, and unsupressable/instantaneous thoughts. For example, lets say, in that enviornment when everything matters, you have a 19 year old male and a 19 year old female on post guarding that ECP, on overwatch, nightwatch at a COP, or on a rooftop gaurding your squad while you sleep; who knows what they will be doing or thinking, but i know what they wont be doing. And what they wont be doing is paying fucking attention and watching your ass while you sleep for the measly 2 or 3 hours you get a fucking night! There already serious problems with staying awake on posts at night, especially when you cant stretch out for whatever reason but have to sit still or are lying down. Youre operating on minimal sleep to the point where its hard to stay awake sometimes during the day, while on a foot patrol, in 130 degree heat. Idk about anybody else but when i was 19, if you had put a fresh piece of fit female ass shoulder to shouder with me on a midnight post… And entire batallion of north koreans could have invaded our FOB in Iraq and i wouldn't have noticed. All using flashlights to cut the c-wire, laughing, and speaking french or whatever. Probably wouldnt see a single one. Cause i would have been thinking either damn i want to fuck this bitch or damn this bitch stinks! Depending on what time frame in the deployment it was because we didnt have showers for the first 2 months on my first pump.

Lastly is the physical aspect, yes women can train to be as capable as most men. True. But how few are they? 1 in a couple hundred? And even trained they arent as capable as the most capable men. Their spacial reasoning isnt the same. Again its how we evolved as human beings. Thats typically why men are better at sports. Its not as much muscle, some of it is, but not as much as it is natural abilities that typically accompany each sex. Now youre in a legue of people who commonly are in good physical shape to start with but additionally train almost to the level of professional athletes. At least cardio wise. Often enough marine infantry arent complete gym rats like people imagine. Cardio is far more important and you dont get alot of time for the gym on deployments. My point is that if you really kept up the marine infantry standards there would be very few women who could actually be that capable.

And, least important of the natural and unstoppable male reactions would be the overwhelming desire to help a female in need. You girls ever notice how when you are having troubke with something theres a plethera of male help at your disposal? Ever notice how guys dont get the same assistance? Lets say she does get shot. Every guy there is going to be pinning to go get her. And thats fine cause its that way with males too but generally its the next marine in line that risks his ass to do it, not a whole squad. Under the right circumstnaces we would throw out a caribeaner on 550 cord, so he could attach it to his armour and drag his bloody ass back. Would that happen with a female marine? Idk but i get the feeling that insted of 1 dying marine you would very suddenly be forced to deal with 3 or 4. This already happens as it is. We lost a corpsman and 1 marine in exactly that kind of scenario. Both died trying to get another wounded marine out of a road. Amplify that impulse reaction because its a she not a he.

Short answer is yes, and i want to make this clear, im in no way saying certain women arent as capable as some men, but…

The next major issue i see with it is unit cohesion. Typically our patrols were squad sized but occasionally they would be smaller team sized or larger platoon sized, a few times they might be company sized, but those are pretty rare. So usually you would step off with 10 to 15 guys on a patrol. Its not always but almost always its the same 10 to 15 guys. You all know eachother better than anyone has ever known you before. You eat, shit, sleep, piss together, you tell stories, you share water, food, clothing, soap, anything and everything. You drop alot of your childhood inhibitions about alot if things when youre living that close to 10 other guys. You very well might be spooning one night because its fucking cold and when you have a 20k patrol out and a 20k back in the next day, you dont carry stupid shit like sleeping bags. Most nights we just slept in our gear. Right on the ground. Take over a house or a hilltop and thats your bed. Now how does that translate to one of those 10 guys being a female? Lets ignore the bashful bullshit and stick to natural human emotions that cant be helped. Lets say i have Private Dick in my squad. And he has a crush on Private Jane. Private Jane fucks another teams team leader. Its not fratenization. Private Jane did nothing wrong but what just happened in 15 minutes is you now have private jane wont be taking point, she wont be carrying the radio, or any extra gear because the team leader likes her. Private dick now has anamosity towrds both of them. What happens now in a firefight? Does private Dick back him up? Maybe he gives that team leader the infamous one man bump, or he doesnt try to drag his wounded ass out of a danger area, od just doesnt try as hard even. What happened is you have just effectively disabled 1/3 of your squad. Or at the very least you made them for less effective.

There are many more relatively minor issue that are commonly rattled off, like men fart and women dont or whatever, but theyre for the most part sexist bullshit. In my opinion is that if we need to put women in line units they should be segregated at least at the platoon level. I know that sounds bad but it minimizes all those issues i just explained and i think it would make the other platoons try harder. In squad and platoon competitions all of them will be trying harder because they dont want to come in behind the females and the females want to proove themselves. Those 3 scenarios and the 4th natural reason are not just what ifs. Theyre almost certain probabilities because its just human nature. Its how we evolved and how we were raised in society. There is no stopping it, and it would absolutley effect the combat efficiency of marine line units, who are on a world renowned level of being notoriously good at what they do, which is to win battles or to kill off a disporportionately high number of Americas enemies in an effort to win battles.
